The first trailer for the kiwi film 'Whina' has been released ahead of its expected debut in cinemas later this year.

The film tells the inspirational story of Dame Whina Cooper, New Zealand's Te Whaea o Te Motu (Mother of the Nation), her life journey and unshakeable inner strength that led her to become one of Aotearoa's most remarkable and respected leaders.

Starring a string of Aotearoa's acting royalty, teenage Whina is played by Tioreore Ngātai-Melbourne, while young Whina is played by Miriama McDowell (Ngāti Hine, Ngāpuhi) and elderly Whina is played by Rena Owen (Ngāpuhi).

'Whina' is due for release on June 23rd, to coincide with Aotearoa's inaugural Matariki public holiday.
