Oliver “Power” Grant, the visionary executive producer behind the Wu-Tang Clan, has died at 52 following “a courageous and hard-fought battle with pancreatic cancer,” his family and the group confirmed.
Raised in Staten Island’s Park Hill projects alongside the future Wu-Tang members, Grant “rose to become a visionary force, a pillar of the Wu-Tang family, and a global architect of culture. It was the honour of his life to pour his love, wisdom, and brilliance into his family and his community. His impact was singular; there will never be another to take his place,” his family and the group said in a joint statement to Rolling Stone.
“Power will always be loved, and his legacy will forever remain,” the statement added. “Greatness is not what you have, but what you give.”
Although he wasn’t a performing member, Grant’s fingerprints are all over hip-hop history. He helped secure funding for Wu-Tang’s first single, Protect Ya Neck, executive produced Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), and founded the iconic Wu Wear clothing line that made the group a cultural brand beyond music.
Reflecting on his drive, Grant once said, “Two things that make you do good. Either you’re inspired, or you’re desperate. Everybody was hustling. … Our main money maker was the music, then the touring, then the brand.”
Oliver “Power” Grant leaves behind a legacy bigger than music: a life devoted to family, community, and culture. Hip-hop has lost a giant, but his influence will echo forever.
