A wāhine and a warrior have popped up in Wellington traffic lights thanks to an effort by Wellington City Council.

The "Haka Lanterns" have been installed next to Waitangi Park in Wellington and are celebrating the Te Matatini Kapa Haka Festival kicking off in Wellington this week.

"The hosting of Te Matatini - the pinnacle event for Māori performing arts – is a proud moment for Wellington, and the haka lanterns reflect the critical role mana whenua and tangata whenua play in our city," says Wellington Mayor Justin Lester.

According to the city council, the wāhine and warrior can be expected to pop up at seven other intersections.
