Rihanna has reignited speculation about her long-awaited return to music after making a surprise appearance at Jay-Z’s “Extra Innings” concert at Yankee Stadium.
The singer joined Jay-Z onstage during the early hours of Monday, July 13, following significant delays at the New York venue. Together, they performed their 2009 collaboration “Run This Town,” before Rihanna delivered a solo performance of her 2015 single “Bitch Better Have My Money.”
Addressing the crowd, Rihanna acknowledged that it had been some time since she had performed publicly. She jokingly described herself as “rusty” before telling fans that she had missed being onstage - a comment that quickly fuelled hopes that more performances, or even new music, could be on the horizon.
The appearance was especially significant because Rihanna has largely stepped away from public performances in recent years. Her last major appearance in front of a public audience was the 2023 Super Bowl Halftime Show. She later performed at a private pre-wedding celebration for Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant in India in March 2024.
However, the surprise set should not yet be treated as confirmation of a full comeback. Rihanna has not announced a new album, tour or release date, despite years of intense anticipation surrounding her ninth studio record.
Her most recent album, Anti, arrived in 2016 and included singles such as “Work,” “Needed Me” and “Love on the Brain.” In the decade since its release, Rihanna has focused heavily on her Fenty businesses and family life, while still occasionally contributing new music and returning to the stage for major events.
The Yankee Stadium performance took place during the third and final night of Jay-Z’s three-show residency. The concert followed two anniversary-focused shows honouring 30 years of his debut album, Reasonable Doubt, and 25 years of The Blueprint.
Rihanna was one of several high-profile guests featured during the finale. Beyoncé, Usher, Teyana Taylor, Pharrell Williams, Clipse, Jeezy, Jermaine Dupri, Swizz Beatz, The-Dream, Fat Joe and Jadakiss also appeared during the extensive, career-spanning show.
The concert began hours later than scheduled after security problems disrupted entry to the stadium. Jay-Z eventually took the stage shortly after midnight, with the performance continuing until approximately 3 a.m. Despite that difficult start, Rihanna’s arrival became one of the night’s most talked-about moments. The performance offered fans a rare reminder of her commanding stage presence and showed that the audience’s appetite for her return has not diminished.
Whether the appearance was a one-off celebration or the opening move in a larger musical rollout remains unknown. For now, Rihanna has given fans something they have been waiting years to see: her back onstage, performing hits and appearing genuinely excited to be there.
