If you grew up on Aaliyah, this one's for you.
Missy Elliott is set to lead a full tribute to the late R&B icon at Essence Festival 2026, and honestly, there's no one better to do it. Missy didn't just admire Aaliyah from afar; she helped build her. She wrote and co-produced some of Aaliyah's most iconic records, including "One in a Million," "Hot Like Fire," and "Best Friends," and always called Aaliyah her "little sister." Their bond was real, and their creative chemistry? Unmatched.
The tribute goes down on July 5 at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, the closing night of Essence Fest, and it's been put together with the full blessing of Aaliyah's mum Diane Haughton and her brother Rashad. So, this is family-approved, done with love.
The timing couldn't feel more right. This year marks 30 years since One in a Million dropped and 25 years since Aaliyah's self-titled final album; the record that reminded the world just how far ahead of her time she truly was. Nearly 25 years on from her passing, her influence is still everywhere. That futuristic blend of R&B, hip-hop and electronic production she pioneered? Artists are still chasing it.
Missy has never stopped honouring that legacy, and this tribute looks set to be her most powerful acknowledgment yet of what Aaliyah meant to her, and to all of us.
