The world reacts to the death of Riverdale and Beverly Hills, 90210 actor Luke Perry

TV star Luke Perry has died in hospital, surrounded by his family, five days after suffering a "massive" stroke.

The Beverly Hills 90210 and Riverdale star was 52.

Perry's family issued a statement saying: "He was surrounded by his children Jack and Sophie, fiancé Wendy Madison Bauer, ex-wife Minnie Sharp, mother Ann Bennett, step-father Steve Bennett, brother Tom Perry, sister Amy Coder, and other close family and friends.

"The family appreciates the outpouring of support and prayers that have been extended to Luke from around the world, and respectfully request privacy in this time of great mourning. No further details will be released at this time."

Luke Perry played the onscreen father of Kiwi actor KJ Apa in Riverdale, Fred Andrews. 

It's also being reported that the production company behind Riverdale, CW has halted production on the Netflix show. Representatives said in a statement: "We are deeply saddened to learn today about the passing of Luke Perry. A beloved member of the 'Riverdale,' Warner Bros. and CW family.

Fans and celebrity fans have sent their support to Perry and his family, taking to social media to express their sadness. 

Riverdale stars Lili Reinhart and KJ Apa posted to Instagram to send their support after Perry suffered a stroke a few days ago.

Beverly Hills, 90210 star Shannen Doherty sent her support, posting a photo of the two in the show and saying "Holding you tight and giving you my strength."
