The age at which you pierce your child’s ears has been a controversial topic for some time now, and Kylie Jenner certainly isn’t the first parent to be criticised for it.

A lot of people are calling her a bad parent for piercing her 5-month-old daughter’s ears, but there are just as many people that are defending her decision.

There are quite a few opinions on whether you should pierce your child’s ears or not, and then when should you?

Emergency medicine doctor Elizabeth Murray from the University of Rochester has spoken to PEOPLE about this debate: “My advice is to wait until your child is old enough to participate in caring for the earrings and the discussion of whether or not they want this done to their body.”

The American Academy of Paediatrics says that “Ears may be pierced for cosmetic reasons at any age” and “there is little risk” when using the correct sanitary methods.

Murray also explained the benefits of waiting until the child is older to perform the procedure:  “I have seen far too many infants and toddlers choke on or swallow earring parts. I’ve also seen a large number of earrings end up in a toddler’s nose!”

Technically, Kylie hasn’t done anything wrong by piercing Stormi’s ears at such a young age, but it isn’t the safest option.
