Tributes flow in for TVNZ presenter Greg Boyed after his passing

TVNZ has paid fitting tribute to Greg Boyed on the 1 News at Midday bulletin following the news of the death of their colleague.

Dressed in all black, newsreader Daniel Faitaua reported on the passing of his colleague, just hours after learning of his death.

Then, before signing off Faitaua struggled with his emotions, saying the team wanted to "acknowledge our friend and 1 News colleague Greg Boyed".

"Our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and loved ones," Faitaua continued, while visibly fighting back tears, his voice breaking.

"Our newsroom won't be the same, moe mai ra, e hoa - rest in peace my friend."'

People have offered their support to Boyed's colleagues and expressed admiration for Faitaua for reporting on the loss of a friend with such poise.

News presenter and broadcaster Boyed, died suddenly while on holiday in Switzerland with his wife and young son on Monday, August 20.

His family said in a statement that Boyed, 48, had been "battling depression".

"Greg was the kindest and most caring man, a devoted father who cherished and loved his two children.

"We are all struggling to comes to terms with this," the family said.

TVNZ's Head of News and Current Affairs, John Gillespie, released a statement earlier today saying the news had come to a huge shock to all at TVNZ.

"Greg was a prominent figure in our newsroom for the last 25 years. He was a wonderful man and a talented broadcaster who strongly believed in the power and importance of journalism in people's lives. Greg was known for his warmth and kindness. It's a very personal loss for us.

"Greg will be missed by us, he will be missed by our colleagues in the wider industry and he'll be missed by our viewers. Our thoughts are with Greg's whānau and friends."
