A study has been conducted on how smoking weed can affect baby making abilities!

According to a study published in the journal, Epigenetics, smoking marijuana can cause infertility in men, just as alcohol and tobacco can.

The study found that more THC (what causes the high) in the study's participants urine resulted in a lower sperm count.

"I would say, as a precaution, stop using cannabis for at least six months before trying to conceive," lead author Susan Murphy from Duke University Medical Center said.

The Ministry of Health's cannabis use survey from 2012 and 2013 found that 400,000 New Zealanders use cannabis on an annual basis. That's almost 12% of the population. It also said that 6% of users said that the drug use had a harmful effect on work, studies or employment opportunities.

It comes after the government announced that they would be holding a binding referendum on legalising cannabis for personal use during the 2020 election.
