A cheeky comment made by All Black and Highlanders first five-eighth Lima Sopoaga on NBA star JR Smith's Instagram has sparked a fan war across social media.

Smith, who plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers alongside LeBron James, posted a photo of a van full of money to Instagram with the question:

"You and your child are driving late at night along a deserted road. You come across a van full of money with the driver dead from an apparent heart attack. What lesson do you teach your child?"

Sopoaga, who is currently in South Africa with the Highlanders, commented on the post saying, "Daddy will all this money buy you a jump shot to help LBJ in the finals?" as first alerted by Crowd Goes Wild host Andrew Mulligan.

ICYMI, Lima was talking about the lack of support the Cavs players had given James during their first-round series victory over the Indiana Pacers.

Smith was quick to shut-down the Highlanders first-five with the reply "Who are you? Again?"

And it didn't take long before Smith's fans took to social media in defence of their much-loved basketball hero, sparking the fan face-off.

We're just gonna sit here and drink our tea while we watch this one blow up.
