In a massive achievement for the New Zealand film industry, we have another Hollywood item with Aotearoa's name all over it!

The live-action adaptation of Mulan has just signed on Whale Rider director Niki Caro to run the cutter on the remake. The Wellington-born director shot to international fame in 2002 with the release of Whale Rider, which led to an Oscar nomination for lead actress Keisha Castle-Hughes. She has since worked on North Country and Disney's Macfarland.

Coming off the back of Taika Waititi's success in the film industry with Hunt for the Wilderpeople and Thor 3 - Ragnarok, it's going to be another great period of movie success for New Zealand talent. Caro also garners credit for being only the second female director to be in control of Disney movie with over a $100 Million budget.

Disney have announced that they will be doing right by the movie, with most the lead roles being filled Chinese actors.
