Three weeks ago team-mates Sam Tomkins and Ben Matulino had their beards shaved off in support of Cure Kids and have challenged the public to donate to the cause to see Hurrell get rid of his beard.

Hurrell was inspired to grow his beard to try to raise funds for Cure Kids after meeting Leka Ma’u in Auckland last year. Then eight, Leka had leukaemia; she is now in Canberra after her family relocated but Hurrell has a strong bond with her.

Of his beard getting ‘out of control’, Hurrell said on his Instagram account: “Firstly I just want to say thank you to my girl Leka for everything that she has shown me in her life.
“She was fighting cancer and she is the bravest and cutest girl I’ve ever met.”

Vodafone Warriors managing director Jim Doyle said the club’s players were regularly involved in supporting causes.

“Konrad has got involved in this off his own bat and Sam and Ben joined him in support,” he said.

“It’s always good seeing our players helping charities and causes like this in any way they can.”
